Agricultural Park

One of the first sports venues in San Jose, opening in 1859, was the Agricultural Park, located along the Alameda. The venue hosted baseball, cycling and other sports. As far as I can tell, events listed at the “fair grounds” and “cyclers park” are also references to areas in this public venue.

Minor league teams like the Prune Pickers and the Athletics of San Jose played there, as well as college teams like Santa Clara University and University of the Pacific. San Jose State Normal School played the 1900 football game against Stanford at Cycler’s Park, it would be 95 years before Stanford would play San Jose State in San Jose again.

Sometime around 1905 the land was developed into the Shasta Hanchett Park neighborhood of San Jose. Today San Jose’s Race Street and Alameda intersection marks the corner boundary of the old park.
